Gaming and fandom is a large part of American culture. As a community center, we want to celebrate aspects of the hobby outside of just browsing the latest titles. We are partnering with a few local groups to bring you the first in a planned series of programs, all approaching the hobby in different ways.
The first is one that we’ve been partnered with for a long while now. Iconic is a podcast focused on 13th Age hosted by our role-playing manager, JM Defoggi and regular event hosts Nick and Mark. This is a monthly show not only for those curious about 13th Age but in RPG’s in general.
Second, we are now working with “Praying for Superpowers” a podcast that discusses topics from Magic the Gathering to Time Travel. The PoS guys are on a mission to pull all the things we love into an on-going discussion of why these elements of story and culture appeal to us and how we can use them enrich our lives and the lives of those around us.
Finally, we have the Guild of Gamers, where event host Robert and our own woman-behind-the-scenes JD review up-coming titles, cover a major store event and even give you demos of current titles. This is a semi-monthly program that will be hosted on our Youtube channel.
This is not counting the various writers and reviewers that are also part of the Petrie’s family… we’ll talk about them in the coming months.
Altogether we have so many talented and excited people that make up our community that it would be a shame not make you aware of their efforts. Take the time to check them out, and if you like what you see/hear, let us know. We’re excited to see what more comes our way to help you feel like you’re part of the Petrie’s community even when you’re not at the store.
It’s a hit! The newest card game from Fantasy Flight Games sold out city-wide and had sold out attendances at release events. This original game is easy to learn but so much deeper to master.
This is the world’s first Unique Deck Game, created by legendary designer Richard Garfield, two players step into the roles of mighty Archons, racing to forge keys that unlock the Crucible’s hidden Vaults. Leading their diverse teams, filled with followers from three of the Crucible’s great Houses, the Archons must gather Æmber, stave off their opponent’s progress, and ultimately be the first to open a Vault and gain its incredible knowledge. With a vast array of creatures, artifacts, and abilities and over 104 quadrillion possible decks, every deck is completely one-of-a-kind, and no two battles will ever be the same!
We’ve been getting calls every day for the last two weeks asking for an opportunity to play your unique decks. So starting this coming Tuesday we’ll host casual KeyForge starting at 6pm. Then, just as we do with all our FFG Living Card Games and FFG X-Wing, we will have a larger tournament or special event at least once a month on Saturdays. More on the Saturday events coming soon.
Today we host the annual Storytelling Day, so named because this is where we pull out the games and activities for families to interact with each other through imagination and laughter. We’ve been doing this event for nearly 8 years now. Each year we add different games and events to the schedule of events but one game in particular has taken the front stage. A small independent story telling game by the name of “The Secret Lives of Gingerbread Men.”
This game is unique in that every player builds their character for the group story out of cookies and candy. The character is of course a cookie and the decorations given to the cookie determines the character’s abilities. These abilities are then used to play out a story of the Christmas cookies and their quest to make it to Santa’s sleigh where they will be whisked away to the North Pole. But along the way there are a lot of pit falls for the tiny Gingerbread: cats, the dark place behind the fridge, the runaway train under the tree… so many things can happen on such a dangerous quest.
Tables for The Secret Lives of Gingerbread Men start at 10, 11, 12, 1 and 3. Space is limited and there is a cost of $6 for this event only. Every thing else happening is free.
We’ve also got other planned events but the most important one is a visit from Santa himself. The magic Santa will arrive at 11am and be with us until 1pm. Come get your photos taken and have some cookies and beverages while you play some games and help us assemble our Christmas puzzle.
Oh! And every family that attends, gets to put their names in the drawing to win a Ravensburger Advent Calendar or the Christmas puzzle. So it’s worth it drop by even just to say hi! See you then!
Welcome to Thanksgiving! We have so much happening this month in celebration of families and the season of spending time together. First, November 10 is a HUGE day of events and sales. Not only is it the next GameCon at Rampart High School for your high-school and junior-high aged gamer, but it’s also Ravnica weekend, the first time D&D fans can visit the worlds of Magic the Gathering in a role-playing universe and while the role players are playing Magic, the Magic players can too! We’ll be hosting a 4-booster draft for the card lovers where they can win exclusive lands available nowhere else. But if you are a card player that doesn’t play Magic, we’ll be hosting the KeyForge PreLaunch, the new collectible deck game from Fantasy Flight and Richard Garfield.
And while that is happening, it’s National Neighborhood Toy Store Day! Our focus this year for NNTS is Blue Orange Games. Come by and see some demos from Blue Orange and get a chance to win games, gift certificates, and other goodies while supplies last. We’ll also have Blue Orange products on sale plus these great offers:
- Buy any PlusPlus product and get a bonus PlusPlus bag for free! (while supplies last)
• Spend $20 and get a free Fidget Spinner; Spend $30 and upgrade to a free LED Spinner; Spend $40 or more and upgrade to a DC Superhero Spinner!
• Ravensburger, HABA and WonderForge brand Kids Games are all 15% off.
• All Character Kites and Delta Flyer Kites are buy 1 get 1 half off.
All of these offers are available only on November 10
For Thanksgiving we will be closed on November 24 and 25, but we’ll be open on the 26th with even more great sales. We’ll be announcing those soon!
And while I know it’s a little early to talk Christmas, be on the look out for more information involving our Santa and Gingerbread day on December 1! This is one of our all-time favorite events and you won’t want to miss out on all the great activities and fun that we have.
On November 3rd
you have the opportunity to come play Wrath & Glory: Warhammer 40K
the brand new Role Playing with the lead designer, Ross Watson! This is a unique opportunity to play the game with the designer who brought it to market. Ross knows the universe of 40k and the Wrath & Glory
system in a way few can. And as a bonus, bring your copy of Wrath & Glory so Ross can sign it!
Why come play Wrath & Glory? Explore the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium as you have never seen it before. Die-pool mechanics guide the story as players explore the Imperium Nihilus, a region of space cut off from the light of Terra. Play as Space Marines fighting along the soldiers of the Imperial Guard and the priest of the Adeptus Ministroum as they attempt to carve order out of the Gilead Sector. If the game interests you, pick it up for your home group and explore the Dark Imperium through these lenses or as Eldar, Orks, and Chaos.
Our exclusive Petries X-Wing team, the Starbursts, made a trip to Denver to represent your store at the Store Wars event. Multiple teams showed up representing their home stores. While we didn’t win the tournament we had a lot of fun and ultimately, that’s what it’s all about anyway, right?
Thanks to Wendy, Jason, Stuart, Daryl, and Matt for making us proud.
Here are some photos from the event.
While the first day of fall is September 22, it’s September 1st that marks the end of summer for Petrie’s. Saturday evening at 5 PM we’re hosting our game swap and pot luck event and you’re invited.
If this sounds familiar to you, it should. Every spring, we have done something similar for many years and this last spring we received a lot of feedback that once a year is not enough. With an extended weekend, it was a perfect excuse to swap out a few more games, and get some new ones to prepare for the winter months cooped up indoors.
We also want to highlight our community and because of that we’re hosting a pot-luck and game time too. Play board and card games while the swap is happening. And for anyone that is setting up a table to swap games, we’re asking for a shareable food item for our food table. So dinner and games while getting to know fellow gamers is the ultimate goal.
Additionally, we just finished our astoundingly large Math Trade through Boardgamegeek and all participants will be dropping off and picking up the results of that trade. And usually with an event like this not every game that was offered got picked up, so there will be Math Traders looking to swap their remaining titles. This spells opportunity for you!
Keep in mind that Saturday is also the Petrie’s Labor Day sale and we’ll be having specials on all of our used games, and many select new games and toys. There will be some titles as high as 60% off — All titles are marked with individual sales prices.
We hope that you’ll swing by and take part in the trading, food and game-play. See you there!
Magic constitutes the greatest volume of traded-in used product in the gaming-hobby industry. Articles all over the web compare it to an unregulated stock market, experiencing drops and gains that would make Wall Street itself run in fear.
Recent trends have made it necessary for us to reassess our numbers. Starting in October we will be changing our percentages and we wanted to give you as much advance notice as possible.
Card for card trades remain the same. For each card traded in, you receive 60% for Magic cards in the store for other value cards (does not apply to bulk commons, uncommons and lands).
Commons and Uncommons will also stay at 2 for 1—for every 2 commons you trade in, you may take any other common in the commons boxes; similarly for every 2 uncommons you trade in, you may take any other uncommon in the commons boxes. We do not price out these cards individually, although any common or uncommon that exceeds a dollar is put into the “value card binders” and treated like a rare card.
For store credit, 45% of the value of cards traded in can be applied to your account to spend on product. And finally, for cash, 30% of the value of cards traded in will be paid out in cash.
Currently we are closed to buying cards. We do this on occasion to catch up on work loads or if we’re at our budget for buying. So please check back with us on a monthly basis.
All numbers are rounded off to the nearest dollar when assessing how much credit or cash is received.
If any of this information is confusing or concerning, please contact us and let us know.
The Colorado Springs Boardgamers has recently moved to using Google Groups. For many years they have existed over on Yahoo. Yahoo Groups had become cumbersome and it was important to create continuity before things completely died off. This is a trial run, and there may be other changes depending on how successful google groups is for the community.
The associated Google Calendar
has also been created. You can configure the Calendar to personalize event notifications, and of course all CSBG Calendar subscribers will see the events you posted covering the wide array of board and card game events all over the city.
You do need to apply for permission to see the group but with three moderators currently working to make the group as active and verbose as possible, response time should be minimal.
The CSBG exists as a loose confederation of former strangers that enjoy playing all kinds of board games. The primary function of the group is to get players talking to other players and setting up gaming opportunities. [There are] two public monthly sessions, but there are many other chances to play.
