Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn League and Casual Play

We’re bringing Ashes to you as a monthly event starting in August. Every 1st Saturday at 10:00 am. We want to bring new players to the game as well as to serve as an event where players already in love with the game can practice and play. If you want to learn to play, we have you covered—there is no need to bring or have any of the cards. For everyone else, bring your favorite decks and prepare for battle.

Ashes is a card game from Plaid Hat Games, originally published in 2015. It uses traditional deck building design mixed with dice all wrapped up in a package of some of the most beautiful artwork in gaming history.

From the publisher: Players take on the roles of Phoenixborns, demi-gods and protectors of this world. These characters are the great saviors of their civilizations. Before they came into existence, the humans were plagued by monsters like chimeras that took away their lands and forced them to live in walled-off cities. When the Phoenixborns came, they fought off the chimeras and freed the lands for humans to take over once again.

But the time of peace was short-lived. A prophecy arose that if one Phoenixborn was able to absorb enough Ashes of others, they would ascend into full gods and take mastery over this world. This, as well as humans’ greed for land, fueled the War of Ashes. The great cities now fight among each other, each one of them with a Phoenixborn at its helm, and you will decide who will rise and who will fall to ashes.

Family Summer Game Packs

One of the memories I have from childhood revolves around the summers I was stuck in a cabin or trailer in the mountains without any electronics and most of the books in my possession already read. My sister and I spent hours replaying games over and over. We’re talking about the classics of family games but also the best of Hoyle’s use of a standard poker deck.

Party games, Kids games, Card games… these are the staples of road trips, camping trips and the best companions to full-on boredom. With the electronic revolution, these situations rarely come up in our lives now, but we’d like to help you out for the similar moments you MAY have for the remainder of the summer.

We’ve combined packs of family, cards, party and travel games wrapped together in packs and no matter what the actual selling price, they are all just $25. Each bundle has a minimum of 5 titles and each one has at LEAST one game of renowned fame or high ranking.

Once again, we had a record breaking attendance at our X-Wing Store Championships this year. We want to thank everyone that attended and hope we see you all return again soon!

Asa Graff (1st Place) Flew 2 A-Wings, 2 X-Wings and a Sheathipede Shuttle
Jon Connely (2nd Place) Flew Soontir Fell in a Tie Interceptor and Cpt. Chearno in a Decimator

Here are the highlights from the day in pictures.

The Board and Card Game Tournaments are our way to get more titles on the table for you. Most of the time these aren’t tournaments, per se, but more chances to learn and play your favorite titles. When ever possible, we want to award a copy of the game to a random participant so that you can win just for attending! Additionally, some titles have hard to find prize support of alternate miniatures, cards and promos. So the only way you can score this bling for your copy of the game is to come to store events.
Never hesitate to attend these events for lack of experience. We are always willing to teach and help you learn as you play.
More Ashes events are being planned and another run of board games coming in August!

The next set is coming! Yes Magic fans, the core sets are back and we’re bringing you tons of events to celebration. All of the Drafts, Showdowns, and League events plus the PreRelease events are coming your way starting next week!
And don’t forget to pre-order your boosters, bundles and planeswalker decks, available at pre-release special prices now!

Envoy Demo Events at Petrie’s!

Envoy is a company dedicated to bringing together the gaming industry — essentially bridging the gap between manufacturers and fans — by creating events so the games can be seen and played.

All of these events are free to play and we encourage all ages and all experiences to attend. Learn and play so you can find hidden gems that may be your next favorite title.

More are planned so please contact us and watch our calendar for events planned in August and the rest of 2018!

Formula D League

Racing fans it’s time to start your engines!
Formula D is a high stakes Formula One type racing game where the players race simulated cars with the hope of crossing the finish line first. We run a league play game featuring multiple tracks all for fun. Join us monthly as we feature a new track each time. No need to commit to every session—just have fun!
Formula De was originally produced in 1991 and was reprinted as Formula D in 2008. After more than 25 years, it is still considered one of the top designer games ever created. We use a hybrid of both versions, utilizing boards from across the history of the game.
This has become an annual tradition for us and we look forward to hosting it again. We provide the boards and pieces—all you have to do is bring your willingness to have fun!
No reservations necessary, just show up at 6pm and we’ll get you in the race.

We are starting our 15 and under campaign for the summer. Starting June 23, it will run through August every 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 1 to 3. GameCon X was a success!

Last month we saw the return of GameCon at Rampart High School, a local con that happens twice a year specifically for high school and junior high aged kids. This is one of our favorite events as it establishes one of our core components: community involvement. There’s such a great sense of comradery among those running the event and the kids attending demonstrate a constant joy and excitement all day long.
According to the GameCon leadership, GameCon X on was a huge success:
  • We had nearly 500 students and spectators from more than 70 schools across the Pikes Peak Region and beyond!
  • We had more than 150 adult and student volunteers assist in the running of games and set-up!
  • We served 175 pizzas!
  • We had an amazing array of tabletop games, including dozens of roleplaying games, board games, miniature war games, and collectible card games.
  • We had excellent community partners, including the Pikes Peak Library District, Petrie’s Family Games, Gamer’s Haven, GalaxyFest, Sheath Comics, AmtGuard, and more.

If you would like to volunteer for GameCon XI, on  November 10, 2018, let Cameron know so he can begin communicating what Petrie’s will be supporting the next time around.

GenCon 50 – Day 3 part 1

Today was when many of the late attendees arrive and it got even busier. We did our best to get in as many demos as we could and for presentations, Jake took in Fantasy Flight’s Flight Report while Cam attended TCG Player’s report.

For FFG the only piece of news that hadn’t already broke was their new miniature game set completely in the Star Wars universe called Legion. Otherwise it was a confirmation of the new reprint of Twilight Imperium, West End’s Star Wars, and several of the up coming expansions and new product. They did finally confirm the retail date for L5R will be the first week of October.

Additional buzz surrounded the news of Endeavour getting reprinted but not by Z-Man but rather by Burnt Island Games.

Cam demoed a Kickstarter called Outlaws: Last Man Standing. Each player has western characters that stand so the opponent doesn’t know which one is which. Through various special powers, players manipulate positions while trying to deduce where the opponents characters are hiding. There are three ways of winning: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Good is having your governor get elected; Bad is having your hitman kill the opponents governor; Ugly is arresting a hitman attempting a kill with your marshal.

Don and Cam found a fun bluffing game called Cake Duel. The premise is sheep attacking other sheep to get their cake but watch out for Wolfie, the wolf in sheep’s clothing trying to get… cake. It plays a little like Liar’s Dice mixed with Love Letter, and is made up of only about 20 cards. The packaging is amazing and overall we’re looking forward to the whimsical art and simple design to show up in retail very soon.

There’s a lot more but it’s late so we’ll do more tomorrow.
